I think what you said about the lust in this movie being "tacky" and Jerry-Springer like is completely ridiculous. Why would they show some time of extremely passionate scene between Carolyn and Buddy? It's not like there was an actual love affair so that would be complete out of place. I think the rawness of that sex scene was perfect. Perhaps the motel scenery was a bit tacky but that was only being realistic. It does not make all of the lust in the movie tacky. For example, when Les is about to have sex with Angela, I do not find that tacky at all. Awkward and creepy, yes. But not tacky. AT ALL. And every scene with Les's fantasies about Angela in beds of rose petals...NOT TACKY. This review is completely shallow, as mentioned by Anonymous above. It is also ignorant and I disagree with this writer entirely. American Beauty is one of the most interesting and ENTERTAINING movies of the last decade. It was very well written and overall beautifully made. Not everyone will enjoy it but I reccomend that anybody who has not yet seen it should and at least give it a chance...and ignore this horrible movie review above entirely.

Ricky is pretty clearly not a sociopath or the next Hannibal Lecter. He obviously cares quite a bit about both his girlfriend and his sick mom. This movie review has done more to expose your shallowness than the movie's.
